How to take care of training gloves? What to do to get rid of unpleasant odor?
As you know, all training gloves during training, they are exposed to sweat, so inadequate care of their hygiene quickly ends up with their unpleasant odor.
In many discussion forums and club discussions, questions are very common:
What to do teeth boxing gloves do not stink?
How to get rid of bad smell ?
Can boxing gloves be washed?
How to take care of your gloves?
We will try to answer these and some other questions in the following guide, using both our own experience and taking advice from long-time fistfighters.
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS
The basic rule that many of us forget is to read the information attached to the gloves.
The method of maintenance often depends on the design of the gloves and the materials from which they are made, so if the manufacturer has included any information, it is worth reading it. If to boxing gloves no instructions are included then you can assume that their maintenance does not deviate from the typical procedure we have described below.
WHAT TO DO TO MAKE BOXING GLOVES NOT STINK?
The most effective way to fight odor is to keep it out of the way.
How not to let that happen?
✅ RULE 1 - use boxing wraps or inner gloves!
As is well known boxing wraps (or alternatively inner gloves) are designed to further stiffen the hand and wrist from damage. However, this is not their only function.
The wraps are also designed to insulate the gloves from the sweat secreted by the hands during training and thus reduce sweating, which is the main cause of mold and mildew inside the gloves.
You can wash the boxing wraps even several times a week without any problem or risk of damage, thus ensuring proper hygiene during training.
An alternative to boxing wraps are inner gloves, which perform a similar function but are more comfortable and quicker to put on. The third group of products that can help you keep your gloves from getting sweaty are the ankle protectors that also come with boxing bandages attached to them.

✅ RULE 2 - Remember to dry your gloves.
Unfortunately, boxing wraps alone won't get the job done 100% of the time.
During intense training, boxing bandages also soak up moisture, which then seeps into the gloves. It should be remembered that unpleasant odor is primarily the result of bacteria and fungi that thrive in damp places.
To prevent gloves from getting moldy, dry them properly after each workout.
Remember that the gloves should be dried at room temperature (which does not exceed 25 degrees), do not dry them on radiators because the high temperature can lead to cracking of the material.
When drying, remember to ensure adequate airflow inside the gloves. This can be achieved, for example, by supporting the cuff of the glove.
If you want to dry your gloves faster and more thoroughly you should use an additional dehumidifier, which will significantly speed up the process - especially in this area to which the natural airflow is quite limited.
For this purpose, we recommend the product DBX DRYER (learn more >>)
How it works?
During training, sweat soaks into your sports equipment, which, combined with the high temperature and exfoliated skin and dirt from the outside, provides the perfect environment for the growth of mold and mildew.
Molds and fungi not only cause unpleasant but can also lead to allergies and fungal infections that are difficult to treat.
Both mold and fungi need moisture to grow, so the primary method of prevention is to dry equipment thoroughly after training. Unfortunately, for some products such as boxing gloves, footwear or training shields, this process is hampered by restricted airflow.
According to DBX Dryer is to dry the equipment in hard-to-reach places blocking the growth of mold and mildew
✅ RULE 3 - clean the outer surface of the gloves
Although for most processes resulting in unpleasant odors occur inside them then you should not neglect to taking care of their exterior.
It is on the outside that most sweat (yours and that of your training partners) collects.
Sweat and exfoliated skin accumulates on the seams, Velcro and ventilation mesh (if you have such a glove model) not only weakening their durability but also generating an unpleasant smell. So remember that also the outside of the gloves should be cleaned regularly.
Just wipe them with a damp cloth removing dirt from their surface then leave them out in the open to dry.
HOW TO GET RID OF UNPLEASANT ODOR FROM BOXING GLOVES?
What to do when our gloves are nevertheless permeated by an unpleasant odor?
✅ Antibacterial agents, deodorants.
The use of various types of antibacterial agents (applied just as often to shoes, for example) is quite a debatable matter and the effectiveness of such a solution depends mainly on the effectiveness of the preparation itself. Unfortunately, most of these types of agents only mask the unpleasant odor, by the way, can be a source of allergic reactions on the hands.
In addition, a large number of air fresheners available on the market are created on the basis of alcohol, which may harm the durability of some fabrics and the surface of gloves (especially natural leather)
So is there a safe yet effective glove freshener?
Yes - choose those remedies that are based on natural substances. One such product is the DBX Cleaner we offer
DBX CLEANER is a product designed to take care of the hygiene of sports equipment - especially boxing gloves, footwear, helmets and pads.
Specially developed formulation of the product separates dirt particles from the fabric surface so it quickly, easily and effectively cleans dirty surfaces, and significantly reduces the re-penetration of dirt deep into the already cleaned surface.
The main cleaning ingredient of the preparation is active oxygen which does not weaken the structure of the cleaned fabric and does not weaken its color.
Advantages of DBX CLEANER:
✅ Removes fabric dirt caused during training (sweat, blood, exfoliated skin)
✅ Oxidizes molecules of bacteria, viruses and molds
✅ Does not weaken the structure or color of the fabric
✅ Does not cause allergies
ALTERNATIVE GLOVE CLEANING METHODS FOR USE AT HOME
✅ Freezing gloves
One of the oldest and most effective methods to get rid of glove odor is to freeze them.
This effectively gets rid of any bacteria and fungi that have nested in the gloves.
The gloves should be properly dried after which they should be put in a plastic bag and left (preferably overnight) in the freezer. Once removed from the freezer, the gloves should not be used until they have thawed completely (at least a few hours after removal).
Very important in the whole process is the proper drying of the gloves before putting them in the freezer
If you don't, the glove material may be damaged. We recommend in the drying process to use additional dehumidifiers, such as. DBX Dryer
✅Stuffing the gloves with paper
A common method to help dry boxing gloves is to stuff them with paper.
The paper is excellent at absorbing moisture to ensure proper drying of the gloves. Toilet paper or paper towels work best in this role. Do not use glossy papers as their moisture absorption is very limited.
Some trainers say that even better results can be obtained by wrapping pieces of coal in newspaper.
The most common questions about. taking care of boxing gloves
Can boxing gloves be washed?
Training gloves, especially boxing gloves, should not be washed. Washing gloves can effectively harm not only the materials but especially the sponge used to fill them. If you already want to clean the gloves then you can gently wipe them with a damp cloth, but remember not to soak the filler.
How to take care of training gloves?
As written earlier, the basis is to not let them get moldy because mold and fungi are the cause of the odor.
So be sure to use wraps and properly dry gloves after training.
Is there anything else we can do?
Glove care varies depending on what material they are made of. Natural leather requires lubrication, ordinary petroleum jelly is used for this purpose possibly skin care preparations. Gloves made of synthetic leather do not require lubrication, just wipe them with a damp cloth.
After what time should boxing gloves be replaced?
It depends on how often you use them and what condition they are in. If there is an unpleasant odor coming out of nothing that you can't deal with ww. tips and cleaning products it means that the process of fungus in your gloves is already very advanced and it is worth replacing them for hygienic reasons.
The second major reason to replace them should be the inadequate condition of the filling. If the glove filling has begun to crumble or has already compacted to the point where the gloves no longer provide proper cushioning, it's high time to replace them. Remember that training with gloves in which the filling has been damaged is dangerous for both you and your training partner.
Can boxing gloves be dried with a hair dryer?
This is not a good idea because high temperatures can be harmful to some fabrics and especially to natural leather. The exception is drying with low temperature or cold air, which some dryers allow you to do.
