How to choose the weight and size of the punching bag? We compare bags of different sizes and dispel myths | Fighter's Backstory Series
In today's blog post, we will answer one of the most frequently asked questions, namely how to choose the weight and size of a boxing bag to best suit your training needs. We invite you to take advantage of our knowledge and experience.
What to follow when selecting a bag?
Most people who plan to buy a boxing bag for their own use wonder how big the bag should be, so that they can freely train on it all the techniques required to train the combat sport they practice. The choice of bag size depends precisely on what kind of training you intend to do on it.
- Boxing training - in this case, the length of the bag does not matter much, since most of the techniques you will train are performed at waist-to-head level. So if you have a lower bag, it will not negatively affect the effectiveness of training and the ability to practice fist techniques.
- Kickboxing training - if you are looking for a bag for training boxing techniques and kicks, then the height of the bag is already very important. It must be high enough for you to train kicks on it, both low kicks (such as low-kick) and high kicks (such as high-kick).
How to choose the height of the bag for training kickboxing techniques?
There is a simple patent for this. All you need to do is measure the distance from your knee to the top of your head. The height of the bag, on which you will be able to freely train kicks and kicks, should be as follows. You don't even have to take measurements - you can just stand next to the hanging bag and check that it starts at the top of your head and ends at the height of your knee.
A bag with a height that corresponds to the distance between your knee and the top of your head, will allow you to fully comfortable to train low kicks at knee height, boxing punches at head height and will leave about 20 centimeters of reserve to perform high kicks. Choosing a higher bag will not be a mistake, but it will no longer raise its functionality. Exactly worth measuring especially if you need to hang a bag in a room with a low ceiling.
Choose the right weight of the punching bag
To begin with, we need to dispel the misconception that the bigger the bag, the greater the weight must always be. Of course, this is not excluded, but the type of filler must be taken into account - if a particular manufacturer uses the same type of filling for all its bags, then it is logical that the larger the bag, the heavier it will be.
But all you need to do is take our SBRX line of bags, which we filled with rubber granules instead of the commonly used material offcuts. Thanks to the use of a heavier filler, the bag, despite its not very large dimensions (height 130 cm), weighs about 60 kg. Thus, this is a really big weight, which classifies the bag as a so-called heavy bag that can be used for intensive punching power training. If, on the other hand, it had been filled with material offcuts, then its weight would probably have been around 30 kilograms.
Thus, as you can see, the height of the bag and its weight do not always go hand in hand, therefore, when buying a bag, pay attention to what it is filled with and its weight.
How bag weight affects training?
Choosing a boxing bag weight depends on what your training goals are.
- Lighter bags (weight about 30 kg) - are the right choice for cardio training, technical training, practicing sense of distance, fitness, hitting accuracy.
- Heavier bags (weight over 50 kg) - they are used to train impact strength. Due to their heavy weight, they remain stable and are therefore not very suitable for technical training.
Bags weighing about 40 kg are a kind of compromise between bags for technical training and bags for punching power training. DBX Bushido bags have an additional lower attachment, which is used to stabilize such a bag to the ground with an expander.

A reminder that the bag must not hang too low above the ground, we recommend that it hangs at least 30-40 cm from the ground. Facts and myths about boxing bags
Almost at the end of this post, we want to dispel for good two myths about punching bags that you can often read on various online forums.
Myth No. 1 - the bigger the bag, the greater the training possibilities
This is not entirely true. As we have already written, in the case of typical boxing training, the surface area of the bag does not matter so much. Bags that take the height from waist to head are completely sufficient. In kickboxing training, on the other hand, you need a training surface that covers the height from the knee to the top of the head. If you buy a larger bag, nothing will happen, while not always as the need, it is not always justified, especially when you do not have a high enough room that would allow such a high bag to hang. Therefore, do not suggest this myth, but consider what kind of training you will use the bag for, measure your distance from the knee to the top of the head and then you will know what height of the bag is optimal for you. Alternatively, you can choose a bag in which it will have about 10 cm of reserve, while higher ones no longer have any justification.
Myth #2 - the bag must be as heavy as possible
If this were really the case, why would combat sports clubs use bags of different weights, different sizes and different shapes? As we have already written, heavy bags, or so-called heavy bags, are used to work out the force of impact. And in this case, we can indeed say that the heavier the bag, the more effective the training. So if you are going to train punching power, the weight of the bag really matters here.
On the other hand, for technical training, the weight of the bag should be lighter. So it is not that the higher the weight of the bag, the better. It should be tailored to your needs and training goals, and that's what you should follow in choosing a punching bag. Some compromise is bags of medium weight, about 40 kg. These are bags that will work well for both technical training and impact strength training, especially if you use the lower attachment and expanders to help stabilize this bag during strength training.
